ST. PAUL CEMETERY AND CHURCH -
MINE CREEK TOWNSHIP
St. Paul's Church and Cemetery is located on Highway 278W, (Old Hwy 4) about two
miles west of Ozan, it is in Section 13
in Township 10 S and Range 26 H.
The deed for the land is recorded in the Hempstead County Deed Book T, pages
170-171. James May and Letsey May,
his wife, sold to Harvey H. Hanna, Edward Fontaine and John S. Scott, Trustees,
"for the use, benefit and behalf of St. Paul's Church (a building to be erected
on the land as described) the following land to wit: Two acres of land ••• of
the SE Quarter of SW Quarter of Section 26 Township 10 Range 26....for
members of the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Cumberland Presbyterian Church
worshiping at the said St. Paul's ... " Deed dated March 16, 1867. According to
a plaque on the church, the first building was made of logs in 1867 and
remodeled in 1872, since then an additional room was
added.
The first person to have been recorded to have been buried in the cemetery was Penn Greenville Goodlett, age 4, the son of D.M. Goodlett and Martha A. on April 1875. There are a number of graves that have been lost, many of which carry only the inscription unknown grave. The cemetery has a association which keeps the cemetery well cared for and maintained. Any one having question about the cemetery may contact Erwin Monroe Stuart (P.O. Box 93, Ozan, AR 71855) who has cared for the cemetery for over 50 years.
OLD IRVIN GRAVEYARD DISPLACED BY MILITARY PROVING GROUNDS:
Irvin Graveyard, which is now a part of St. Paul's on the north side, was moved
to the location on an acre of land purchased in October, -1941 from
Leon Hines and Blanche Hines, his wife, by the St. Paul Cemetery Association and
C.M. Irvin and Ben Irvin, Trustees of the Irvin Cemetery, Hempstead County Deed
Book 172, page 125, This occurred when cemeteries were being relocated for the
Southwest Proving Ground. The
former location of the Irvin graveyard was in the South Half of SE Quarter of SE
Quarter of SW Quarter of SW Quarter of Section 21, Township 10 S, and Range 25 W
on land purchased by J.E. Irvin in 1890.
Old May Family Cemetery
The old May Family cemetery is located directly across the road from St Paul
cemetery behind the home of 6521 Hwy 278. It has two grave markers
one for Andrew W. May b 4/8/1840 - d 3/31/1860 the son of James R. May. The
other marker that of James R. May b 6/11/1805 - d 8/5/1871. James
is the husband of Letsey May
buried in St Paul cemetery. This information (father - Son) is verified by the
US Census records of 1850 Mine Creek Township, Hempstead County. He
and his wife donated the land for St Paul Cemetery. There are
other unmarked and lost graves in this old family cemetery.
