William Merritt Scott; Early Settlement Of Hodgeman County This genealogy report came from Kansas State Archives of the Early Settlers Of Kansas. It is a 5 pages report of Hodgeman County and I will send any one a copy that would like to have it. In the winter of 1877, people living in the Eastern States began to look with favor upon Western Kansas, and colonies were formed to come west to locate and develop the country. In the early part of the winter, a meeting was held at Callicoon depot, New York to organize colonies for coming to this part of the state this meeting was composed from New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. They all could not agree to go to the same locality, so those those people from New York and Pennsylvania chose to come to Kansas our William Merritt was 1 of the 27 men on the committee. Julia Ann Bailey had 3 family members, Zina Bailey, Winston Bailey and Wallace Bailey. A majority ruled and in the January, 1878, a little colony pioneered westward and located in the Vally of Buckner Creek a few miles East of the present town of Jetmore. Four and a half mile east of Jetmore Kansas on the Southwest Quarter of Section 35,TWP 22N R 23E, here 16x16 feet with basement were erected houses they were along the Buckner Creek. Lumber was freighted across the country from Kinsley and carpenter work was done by the members. No roads were seen nor paths for the frontiersmen to follow save and except the well beaten paths of the buffalo leading over the hills where only a short time before they had traveled going to and from for water. The antelope could be seen from day to day and skeletons of the buffaloes could be seen where they had been killed by Indain who, only had gone to the Indian Territory, leaving many evidences of their habitation behind. In the spring of 1880, William Inderlied and Arthur Inderlied, accompanied by William Merritt Scott, went in a covered wagon to the Indian Territory and purchased a large herd of Southern cattle and drove them across the plains to Hodgeman County. The hard winter of 1880-81 came on and as there was no feed and only natural shelter, a heavy loss of cattle was sustained. Merritt Scott is our direct line in the Scott family. William and Julia Ann Bailey had many children in, Pennsylvania and then they moved to Marena Township Dist. 382, Hodgeman County, Kansas.
