Bromwell, Frank H. Apr. 17, 1921 May. 4, 2005 PLAINS ­ Frank H. Bromwell, 84, died Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at Dallas County Hospital in Fordyce, Ark. He was born April 17, 1921, to Denzil F. and Edith (Burgett) Bromwell in Plains. He married Meryl B. Scheib Feb. 19, 1948, at Plains. She survives. He attended the Plains school system, graduating from Plains High School in 1940. He joined the U.S. Navy in January 1941. He was a survivor of Pearl Harbor and served aboard the U.S.S. Maryland BB46 and was in eight battles in the South Pacific. He worked for City Service Oil Company, retiring in 1983. Other survivors include four sons, Tom Bromwell and wife Kay, Deerfield, Gary Bromwell, Plains, Richard Bromwell, Kansas City, Kan. and Larry Bromwell, Hutchinson; one daughter, Denice Bromwell, Inman; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, John Bromwell and wife Phyllis, Liberal, Don Bromwell and wife Frankie, Stephenville, Texas; Mannley Bromwell and wife Lucy, Plains; and one sister, Jessie Henry, Colorado Springs, Colo. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Jack Bromwell; one grandson, Jake; and one brother, Denn Bromwell. * Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary Chapel in Meade with the Rev. Terry Mayhew presiding. Burial will be in Plains Cemetery.

He married Ruth Kendall in 1939. He then married Idela Marie Nelson Cavin Dec. 21, 1968, in Liberal. She survives. He attended the Plains school system, graduating from Plains High School in 1934. He was a farmer, retiring in 1986. He was also owner of the Roundup Restaurant located in Plains. He was a former Plains City Councilman, serving for 27 years and was a volunteer fireman, serving as fire chief for 17 years.  He was a member of the Plains United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by one son, James; one grandchild; and two brothers, Herbert and Raymond McCarty.

He married Michele Hoffman July 15, 1967, in Meade. He attended the Mertilla country school, later attended and graduated from Plains High School. He was a salesman for John Deere. He enjoyed attending area auctions, in particular farm auctions. Survivors include one son, Chris Pippitt, Alva, Okla.; one daughter, Tara Pippitt, Wichita; one brother, Eddie Pippitt, Meade; and three sisters, Teresa Cosan of Blue Springs, Mo., Cheryl Reiss, Plains, and Cyndi Pippitt, Peyton, Colo. * Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Plains with the Rev. Weymouth DeNeiah Pope, 88, died July 30, 2005, at Meade District Hospital. She was born Feb. 6, 1917, to Orvel Aquilla Bond and Audrey Elizabeth (Marriott) Bond on the family homestead 14 miles southwest of Lamar, Colo. She married Delbert Pope Dec. 20, 1934. He died Feb. 15, 1996. She attended the West Glendale School. During her high school years, she attended school in Kismet. She was a member of the West Glendale Friends Church and the Plains Friends Church. Survivors include one daughter, Lelia George and husband Don, Plains; one granddaughter, Traci Ryan and husband Dallas; and two great-grandsons, Tyler Ryan and Michael Ryan, all of Liberal; two brothers, Abel Franklin Bond, Wichita, and Joseph Elmer Bond, LaCrosse, Wis.; one sister, Mary Ruthanna Zane, Ashland; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Orvel Audrey Bond, Charles Oren Bond and James Lowell Bond; and one sister, Myrabelle Fern Wheelock. * Funeral services were at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Plains Friends Church with Pastor Dan Biernacki presiding. Burial was in the Plains Cemetery.

PLAINS ­ Helen S. Willmett, 90, died Sunday, April 17, at Meade District Hospital. She was born Sept. 24, 1914, to John and Edith Sandburg Staples at Pratt. She graduated from Plains High School in 1932. She was a homemaker and retired custodian of the Plains Grade School. She was a member of Presbyterian Church of Pratt. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Satanta. She is survived by two brothers, Henry M. Staples, Hugoton and Frank Staples, Pratt. She was preceded in death by five brothers. * Cremation has taken place, and private family inurnment will take place in Plains Cemetery.

PLAINS ­ Louise Winfrey, 100, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at Western Plains Regional Medical Center in Dodge City. She was born July 22, 1904, to Frank and Etta (Smith) Sherman on a farm in rural Dudley, Ill. She attended a rural school near the farm. She graduated from Plains High School in 1925. She later attended Emporia State Teachers College. She married William E. Winfrey May 5, 1928. He died Dec. 16, 1981. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She was a past member of the WCTU, Order of the Eastern Star, Young at Heart and the North Plains Social and Study Club, all of Plains. She enjoyed working with crafts, quilting, sewing and making dolls. Survivors include four sons, Darrell Winfrey and wife Vera Mae, Plains, Larry Winfrey and wife Mickey, Plains, Gordon Winfrey and wife Eldena, Plains, and James Winfrey and wife Karen, Plains; two daughters, Carol Palmer, Dodge City, and Joy Brackey, Dodge City; 26 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; one brother, John Shuman, Mesa, Ariz.; and two sisters, Helen Roberts, Longmont, Colo., and Elsie Mae Trimpa, Dodge City. She was also preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and two sisters. * Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Plains with the Rev. Terry Mayhew presiding. Burial will be in Plains Cemetery.
