She attended Coffeyville High School, graduating in 1922. Gladys had a knack for math and she used to amaze the customers at the lumber yard where her dad was the assistant manager by figuring board feet in her head. Following a 4-year courtship, Gladys married Shelby S. Whitehead on May 12, 1924 at age 20. To get her attention, Shelby drove a red Buick convertible, which Gladys and her father had looked at but Shelby's father had bought, around the high school honking the horn until the teacher instructed Gladys to have Shelby stop. After living briefly in Kansas City, Gladys and Shelby moved to Wichita where they opened "Whitehead Bakery" across the street from East High School. One of her favorite customers was Walter Beech. Later, Gladys became a sales demonstrator of Feather Combs at Innes Dept. Store, of Redi-Wheat at the Allis Hotel and of Sunbeam appliances at David's. Gladys and Shelby were married for 49 years until their divorce on June 28, 1973. Gladys remarried on August 27, 1973 to Eldon A. Means, a consulting chemist and Shelby's best friend. However, Gladys and Shelby remained good friends. In fact, Gladys would routinely invite Shelby and his ladyfriend, Linda Joyce, over for holiday meals with she and Eldon, particularly at Thanksgiving and Christmas, until their health prevented. Gladys loved to entertain and did so in high style, using her silver service, cut crystal and Haviland china. Gladys and Eldon were married for 24 years until his death on January 17, 1997. Shelby died on May 18, 2003 at age 102. Gladys was a member of the West Side Christian Church.
